Beachballs and Umbrellas – http://tinyurl.com/dduey
We designed what a basic ‘first’ game could look like. We had been asked to create a huge painting so we thought we would make a game as well. It was for a mayors ‘beachball’ auction and the painting (with a free game) was bought by the mayor of the Marion council. (This gmd needs Game Maker version 5.3A http://www.gamemaker.nl/old.html)

SUMMARIES (of the sub pages on your right)

Game maker – easy3s
- example of using Game maker across the curricula. This literacy spelling maze game was made by Year 3 miniLegends.
- you can also download the template to quickly make your own maze game and learn about Game Maker.

Game Maker – a Primary Perspective
- suggests how to use Game Maker and game development in curriculum delivery

Game Maker – The Grand Parade
- how templates started in the early days, the original game
(download the gmd here, uses version 5.3A) http://tinyurl.com/8mlos

Game Maker – the software and basics
- larger picture of the software and a brief summary of how to use Game Maker. Please note that the concepts of these words and picture (to some) can seem daunting yet are readily embraced in one hands on lesson.

mini3Dmaze and Splatter!
- registration to use the maze template is very cheap for schools. Splatter! doesn’t even need Game Maker. The students wanted not only 3D and something like fps (first person shooter) but also suggested that there be a series of questions that you have to answer as you get through the maze. ‘Play’ is a great place to learn the game and race each other. Levels 1, 2 and 3 have the general knowledge and fun questions. There are also hidden maps (that come from the template) to help you navigate. Have fun!

2. Andrew pine - August 14, 2006

I love this program..keep it up, perhaps you could even pitch an interactive media class for senior school students? IT’D ROCK!

3. Al Upton - August 14, 2006

Thanks Mark and Andrew – do check out the other sites listed above especially Bill Kerr for secondary. You would need to register version 6.1 (not much) to use my 3Dmaze template – this lends itself well to secondary students and integrating media. Cheers, Al

5. Bill Kerr - October 23, 2006

hi al,

I’ve just been here to grab your files again – I’ve been talking to the wiltja’s at woodville and a few people are very interested in trialling this approach with some aboriginal students. I’ll be in touch to talk it through some more soon. Another win for your innovative approach :-)

cheers,
- Bill

Hi Al

I’ve at last found time to download Gamemaker and have a play with it – its great! I’ve only made the first game so far, but had lots of fun.
I’m going to talk to Justin tomorrow about using it with some of his class, one person in particular who is a bit disengaged right now. I think it might be just what he needs.

Hello Al,
Am just starting out in a Game Maker project here in NSW with the Centre for Learning Innovation (CLI). Its a pilot program with a view to supporting Game Maker in NSW classrooms. My class have only had a couple of hours (2 really) on computer working through a tutorial type process with a mentor from CLI but they are all so excited and enthusiastic that there will be no holding them back. Have a look on our blog for their comments and I’m just getting a wiki up (if it is not blocked aagin! ) Wiki = v. basic but we will get there (I hope)

8. I don´t want to inform you guys about my name. - November 30, 2006

You know that there are a lot of kids, who likes fps games.
So here is a good idea: why dont you go check http://www.thegamecreators.com
They have all the 3D game equipments nessesary for making some really cool 3D games.

9. Al Upton - December 1, 2006

It’s a shame you didn’t want to use your name (even your first name only) but the site you said does look cool. FPS creator and The 3D Gamemaker look easy – “just a click on a mouse”. The packages have all the bits and pieces to add into a game or you can get right into the programming side of things. It’s a lot like Game Maker in that regard except it isn’t free I suppose. Did you see Splatter! above http://tinyurl.com/7lxbx (it doesn’t need Game maker) It’s the best I could put together with the time I had. I would love to see more 3D games made with Game Maker. Thanks for your comment.
